Characteristics of Marble Tile
Few building materials say luxury and elegance like marble. This natural stone product has been used for centuries, and it is still a favorite of homeowners in the Meridian area today.
Marble tiles and slabs are commonly used for flooring, countertops and backsplashes. There are many marble varieties and finishes to be aware of when selecting this stone for your next project.
The most common type of marble is Carrara. This stone has the characteristic grey or blue veining throughout. The color of the stone tends to be a light shade of grey as well. Calacatta marble is often confused with Carrara. It is less common, however, and it is know for a bright white background with more prominent veining.
The finish you select for your marble will have the biggest impact on its performance in your home. Polished marble is finished to a high shine. The glossy surface is beautiful and helps protect the stone from damage. It does show wear and tear quite easily easily, however, and the surface can be quite slippery when wet. Honed marble, on the other hand, has a more rustic, matte finish. It feels smooth and velvety, and will hide flaws quite well. Without the high polish, however, it is also more susceptible to staining.
Marble Tile Maintenance
Regardless of the finish you select, marble has some special maintenance requirements to keep it looking its best over time. Like all natural stone tiles, marble needs to be sealed and resealed every year or so to help the surface resist staining and etching.
Because the stone is so porous, spills should be cleaned up right away, and marble is not typically recommend for very high traffic areas, such as a kitchen or entryway. Always clean marble with a mild detergent or specialty product design specifically for the stone.
If you ever do need to replace a marble tile in your floor or backsplash, make sure to keep some extra materials on hand from the original batch. Because of its unique veining and color variations, marble is very difficult to match.
